Institute Initiatives

The International Institute for Reproductive Loss provides information and resources for academics, practitioners, policymakers, and those who have faced or are facing a potential reproductive loss. We have professional staff devoted to staying current on all relevant published scholarly articles, provide support for talented and passionate researchers, and offer treatment innovations while facilitating new scholarship.

A vast international professional literature has documented increased risk for psychological and emotional harm associated with reproductive loss (e.g., abortion, infertility, miscarriage, stillbirth, perinatal death, and placement for adoption). Further, there is expanding clinical awareness of the many ways a loss may compromise the psychological, spiritual, relational/social, and familial well-being of a sizable proportion of the general population.

However, there remains a pressing need to organize and synthesize the literature, practitioners’ knowledge, and personal narratives to expand and deepen our understanding. With a primary focus on building evidence-based foundation, we strive to substantively address gaps in knowledge regarding how the various reproductive losses may have both overlapping and distinct impacts on individuals, families, and communities.
